Character and Conduct – 27 February – Courage
WHETHER you be man or woman you will never do anything in the world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honour.
JAMES LANE ALLEN
THE brave man is not he who feels no fear
For that were stupid and irrational,
But he whose noble soul its fear subdues
And bravely dares the danger nature shrinks from.
JOANNA BAILLIE
HEROISM is the brilliant triumph of the soul over the flesh-that is to say, over fear: fear of poverty, of suffering, of calumny, of sickness, of isolation, and of death. There is no serious piety without heroism. Heroism is the dazzling and glorious concentration of courage.
Amiel’s Journal
SELF-TRUST is the essence of heroism.

These quotes are from ‘Character and Conduct’ A selection of helpful thoughts from various authors arranged for daily reading.
Collected by Constance M Whishaw and first published in 1905 as a follow up to her volume of Daily Readings for members of the Being and Doing Guild who asked for an additional volume
In her preface Whishaw writes:
‘This collection of noble thoughts expressed by men and women of past and present ages who have endeavoured to leave the world a little better than they found it.’
It is my hope in publishing the her readers may be inspired to imitate the example of the authors.
