Character and Conduct – 7 August – Friendship

Character and Conduct – 7 August – Friendship

FRIENDSHIP is a plant which cannot be forced.

True friendship is no gourd, springing in a night and withering in a day.

CHARLOTTE BRONTE

BLESSED are they who have the gift of making friends, for it is one of God’s best gifts.   It involves many things, but, above all, the power of going out of one’s self, and appreciating whatever is noble and loving in another.

THOMAS HUGHES

FRIENDSHIP cannot be permanent unless it becomes spiritual.   There must be fellowship in the deepest things of the soul, community in the highest thoughts, sympathy with the best endeavours.

HUGH BLACK

These quotes are from ‘Character and Conduct’ A selection of helpful thoughts from various authors arranged for daily reading.

Collected by Constance M Whishaw and first published in 1905 as a follow up to her volume of Daily Readings for members of the Being and Doing Guild who asked for an additional volume

In her preface Whishaw writes:

‘This collection of noble thoughts expressed by men and women of past and present ages who have endeavoured to leave the world a little better than they found it.’

It is my hope in publishing them here readers may be inspired to imitate the example of the authors.
