Precept and Practice – NOVEMBER 15 – Faith – Beyond the Forms of Faith

Precept and Practice – NOVEMBER 15 – Faith – Beyond the Forms of Faith

After all we take the leap which lands us in the supernatural by faith, and faith is God’s gift and not attained by human reasoning.

(Stanley Leathes)

Thou canst not prove the Nameless, O my son,

Nor canst thou prove the world thou movest in,

Thou canst not prove that thou art body alone,

Nor canst thou prove that thou art spirit alone,

Nor canst thou prove that thou art both in one :

Thou canst not prove thou art immortal, no

Nor yet that thou art mortal-nay, my son,

Thou canst not prove that I, who speak with thee,

Am not thyself in converse with thyself,

For nothing worthy proving can be proven,

Nor yet disproven; wherefore be thou wise,

Cleave ever to the sunnier side of doubt,

And cling to Faith beyond the forms of Faith.

(Tennyson – The Ancient Sage)

From the Introduction to Precept and Practice

The kindly welcome given to my other little books, ‘Being and Doing’ and ‘Character and Conduct,’ must be my excuse for adding another collection of extracts to the number now in circulation.

The quotations are gathered from the books of many earnest thinkers, and deal with Life in all its length and breadth, with ourselves, our characters, our plain unvarnished faults and weaknesses, our often untoward circumstances, and with all that drags us down;-  with our purposes, our religion, our love and friendships, and with all that uplifts us;-  with our relation to others, our influence and responsibilities, and finally with those stages of our journey which bring us to the Road’s Last Turn and to the Silent Land.
