Precept and Practice – NOVEMBER 16 – Faith – the Instinct of the Spiritual World

You want to see…..   when in the nature of things you must believe…..    You cannot see what is spiritual;  you might as well expect to hear a picture.   What you see you do not believe;  it is a misnomer;  you see it.   What you believe you cannot see;  it would be an absurdity;  you believe it.   Faith is the instinct of the spiritual world:  it is the sixth sense – the sense of the unseen.

When a man sits in the warm sunshine, do you ask him for proof of it?  He feels – that is all.   And we feel – that is all.   We want no proof of our God.

We feel, we feel!

We do not believe in our God because the Bible tells us of Him.   We believe in the Bible because He tells us of it.   We feel Him, we feel Him, we feel – that is all!

The kindly welcome given to my other little books, ‘Being and Doing’ and ‘Character and Conduct,’ must be my excuse for adding another collection of extracts to the number now in circulation.

The quotations are gathered from the books of many earnest thinkers, and deal with Life in all its length and breadth, with ourselves, our characters, our plain unvarnished faults and weaknesses, our often untoward circumstances, and with all that drags us down;-  with our purposes, our religion, our love and friendships, and with all that uplifts us;-  with our relation to others, our influence and responsibilities, and finally with those stages of our journey which bring us to the Road’s Last Turn and to the Silent Land.
