In the Franciscan community we are called to ‘sit lightly’ on the things of the earth. One reason is to help us not be possessed by our possessions. Another may be to help us live quiet lives so that we can hear the song of praise sung by Mother Earth.
If we are not careful our journey of faith can be about routine instead of following the call of God, ritual instead of action. Each of us needs to learn that we are called by God not so that we might be comfortable but so that we may go and proclaim the love shown to us by God in word and deed to others
Every so often we are ‘gifted’ a song by someone else. it seems as if it comes straight out of Right Field but settles so neatly in our hearts that the umpire shouts ‘Safe’ and our lives are transformed…
Many of us grow our faith in churches where the worship tradition draws us closer to God and, if we are not careful or kind, we can easily forget that God ‘inhabits the praises of His people’ even if it does not seem particularly tuneful to us. It is helpful to remind us that, whatever type of music or instruments are used, God is always present wherever God’s Name is honoured.
Most of God’s saints live their lives being faithfully unnoticed by the world or even those they serve. We should be diligent to thank them for their service and encourage them in their labours and, perhaps, learn to labour alongside them.
If you want a hymns of praise sung loud and long and with feeling ask a group of teenagers to sing for you.

Work songs are found allover the world. Sometimes a song of praise is a reminder of our call to work for others.
