When we decide to love difficult people, when we choose to give ourselves away to those who would wish us harm, we become recipients of God’s grace. In the end those who would wish us harm, if we can find the space and generosity to decide to love them, become our benefactors.
Humility is often intertwined with service. Yet there can be a service that does not add to humility. True humility is of the earth, ‘humus’, and aims to put itself under the feet of everyone and so supporting all.
‘Works a curse!’ It need not be if we decided instead of serving ourselves we use the sweat of our brow to serve others
In churches there are many differently shaped and decorated crosses. Some would make much of their ‘own’ as the ‘true’ cross and be tempted to belittle the devotion of others. We need to remember that it is the Cross of Christ and we cherish it not because of its shape but because our Beloved wore it

As Lent draws to a close we run the risk of going back to ‘business as normal’ and not carry all we have learnt with us. What can we do to continue to grow closer to our Beloved.
To walk in faith always means going where we have not been before nor to places where we are comofrtable. To be faithful means a leap into the unknown knowing only that our Beloved holds us.
It is a long journey from ‘I want to be alone’ to ‘use me’ but it is the only journey worth travelling and the only example worth following.
Every so often God works in and through us despite us and uses ditress and upset to bring restoration and renewal.
Until we learn that ‘my’ vocation is as much God’s gift to others as it is to ourselves we will spend more time on caring for ourelves than for others and build a selfish ‘Georgy-Porgy’ theology.
