Being and Doing – 29 July – Possessions
ONE’S own! what a charm there is in the words! How long it takes boy or man to find out their worth! How fast most of us hold on to them! Faster and more jealously the nearer we are to that general Home into which we can take nothing, but must go naked as we came into the world. When shall we learn that He who multiplieth possessions multiplieth troubles, and that the one single use of things which we call our our, is that they may be His who hath need of them?
TOM HUGHES
I AM certain that the good of human life cannot lie in the possession of things which for one man to possess is for the rest to lose; but rather in things which all can possess alike, or where one man’s wealth promotes his neighbour’s.
SPINOZA
‘THIS tent is mine,’ said Yussouf, ‘ but no more than it is God’s: come in and be at peace.’

These quotes are from ‘Being and Doing’ A selection of helpful thoughts from various authors arranged for daily reading.
Collected by Constance M Whishaw and first published in 1908 for members of the Being and Doing Guild whose object is to do all they can for the relief of suffering and misery.
Most of the writers are 19th Century Christians from Britain and Europe who were committed to living their faith through deeds as well as words – Being AND Doing.
For many years these words have kept me company and encouraged me on the journey of faith. I hope they will encourage others also.
