Being and Doing – 11 December – Pressing Forward
IT IS the one inspiring element of Christianity that it throws us in boundless hope upon the future, and forbids us to dwell in the poisonous shadows of the past. A new and better growth is before us, a fresher, a diviner, a more enthusiastic life awaits us. We are to wake up satisfied in the likeness of Christ, the ever-young Humanity. Therefore, ‘forgetting those things which are behind,’ let us ‘press forward to the mark of the prize of our high calling in Christ Jesus.’
STOPFORD BROOKE
WHOSOEVER may
Discern true ends here – shall grow pure enough
To love them, brave enough to strive for them,
And strong enough to reach them, though the
roads be rough.
E. B. BROWNING
THE past is a story told,
The future may be writ in gold.

These quotes are from ‘Being and Doing’ A selection of helpful thoughts from various authors arranged for daily reading.
Collected by Constance M Whishaw and first published in 1908 for members of the Being and Doing Guild whose object is to do all they can for the relief of suffering and misery.
Most of the writers are 19th Century Christians from Britain and Europe who were committed to living their faith through deeds as well as words – Being AND Doing.
For many years these words have kept me company and encouraged me on the journey of faith. I hope they will encourage others also.
