Character and Conduct – 25 October – Stepping-stones
THE block of granite which was an obstacle in the pathway of the weak, becomes a stepping-stone in the pathway of the strong.
CARLYLE
OUT of difficulties grow miracles.
I hold it truth with him who sings
To one clear harp in divers tones,
That men may rise on stepping stones
Of their dead selves to higher things.
TENNYSON
WHY wilt thou defer thy good purpose from day to day? Arise and begin this very instant, and say, ‘Now is the time to be doing, now is the time to be striving, now is the fit time to amend myself.’
THOMAS À KEMPIS

These quotes are from ‘Character and Conduct’ A selection of helpful thoughts from various authors arranged for daily reading.
Collected by Constance M Whishaw and first published in 1905 as a follow up to her volume of Daily Readings for members of the Being and Doing Guild who asked for an additional volume
In her preface Whishaw writes:
‘This collection of noble thoughts expressed by men and women of past and present ages who have endeavoured to leave the world a little better than they found it.’
It is my hope in publishing them here readers may be inspired to imitate the example of the authors.
