Character and Conduct – 29 October – Day by Day
LO, here hath been dawning
Another blue day;
Think, wilt thou let it
Slip useless away!
CARLYLE
THE perfection of moral character consists in this, in passing every day as the last, and in being neither violently excited, nor torpid, nor playing the hypocrite.
MARCUS AURELIUS
WHEN night comes, list thy deeds; make plain the way
‘Twixt heaven and thee; block it not with delays:
But perfect all before thou sleep’st; then say,
‘There’s one Sun more strung on my Bead of days?’
What’s good store up for Joy, the bad, well scann’d,
Wash off with tears, and get thy Master’s hand.

These quotes are from ‘Character and Conduct’ A selection of helpful thoughts from various authors arranged for daily reading.
Collected by Constance M Whishaw and first published in 1905 as a follow up to her volume of Daily Readings for members of the Being and Doing Guild who asked for an additional volume
In her preface Whishaw writes:
‘This collection of noble thoughts expressed by men and women of past and present ages who have endeavoured to leave the world a little better than they found it.’
It is my hope in publishing them here readers may be inspired to imitate the example of the authors.
