Whispers of His Power – JULY 9
Gen. 2.11-12: The name of the first is Pison: that is it which compasseth the whole land of Hadilah, where there is gold; and the gold of that land is good.
Rev. 21.18: And the city was pure gold, like unto clear glass.
The first mention of gold in Genesis, and the last in Revelation, are full of a lovely thought. Our Havilah may be just an ordinary patch of earth, but if the gold of that land be good, when we come to the City we shall find something familiar, only glorified. It will not be a strange place to us.
The noun which is often used for gold is derived from a root meaning ‘shining’. We know what makes a place to shine: it is the kindness and love of God our Saviour. That golden phrase occurs in a dark setting, Titus 3.3-4: We ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared. ‘Appeared’ here means ‘to shine upon’. So we have the thought of kindness and love shining upon us, and we (in contrast to days past) shining too with kindness and love, rich in the gold of the Lord of Love. And the gold of that land is good.
Let us set our hearts upon this more earnestly than ever, so that everyone coming near us will feel the shining of that love.
