The Lost Coin – a Poem

An old coin covered in verdi gris

The Lost Coin

(after Luke 15v8-10)

These words came to me during a meeting of the Men’s Breakfast Group in our church.  The prompt was a discussion about the origin of a very famous hymn which we had just sung. (No prizes for guessing which one).

Watch this space for further words about a Woolly Wanderer and two Lost Boys….

Here I lie,

covered in dust,

neglected by all,

useless and unused.

Once, I don’t remember when

(It was too long ago),

I was at the front but find myself left behind.

Used to being useful

I am over-looked and forgotten.

Perhaps it was my mistake?

Putting myself forward so often.

Insisting on being of use

(whilst serving only myself),

I find myself alone, neglected,

forgotten and mired in grime.

And then someone remembers:

A cry arises,

A light is lit,

A broom is waved,

A hand reaches out

and…

Turning me over in her hands,

a voice says with joy,

‘There you are!’

I once was lost but now am found.

oooOOOooo
