Being and Doing – 23 June – The Choir Invisible
May I reach
That purest heaven, be to other souls
The cup of strength in some great agony,
Enkindle generous ardour, feed pure love,
Beget the smiles that have no cruelty

as a wise man has said, no one has ever done anything great or useful by listening to the voices from without… Go your way straight to God’s work, in simplicity and singleness of heart.
A perfect Woman, nobly planned,
To warn, to comfort, and command;
And yet a Spirit still and bright
With something of an angel light.
…turning away from their mission to bless, to exhort, to console, that they may struggle through a thousand meannesses into a higher position.
POWER is a gift of God, and may not be laid aside.
In planning the future for a community it is too easy to concentrate on getting to the goal and then leave people on the wayside. Instead of travelling on motorways perhaps Shared Space where everyone has a voice is a better way to travel?
The regeneration of society is in the power of the woman,
We are responsible, not only for doing, but also for leaving undone: else the servant who hid his lord’s talent in the earth would have escaped condemnation.
She is to exercise herself in imagining what would be the effects upon her mind and conduct, if she were daily brought into the presence of the suffering which is not the less real because shut from her sight.
It is of no moment, as a matter of pride or perfectness in herself, whether she knows many languages or one; but it is of the utmost, that she should be able to show kindness to a stranger, and to understand the sweetness of a stranger’s tongue.
