Being and Doing – 4 November – Doubts
Reach downwards to the sunless days
Wherein our guides are blind as we,
And faith is small, and hope delays,
Take Thou the hands of prayer we raise,
And let us feel the light of Thee!
Reach downwards to the sunless days
Wherein our guides are blind as we,
And faith is small, and hope delays,
Take Thou the hands of prayer we raise,
And let us feel the light of Thee!
HOWEVER perplexed you may at any hour become about some question of truth, one refuge and resource is always at hand: you can do something for someone besides yourself.
THEREFORE be strong, be strong,
Ye that remain, nor fruitlessly revolve,
Darkling, the riddles which ye cannot solve,
But do the works that unto you belong;
God is seeking us, and not we Him; and it is an infinite comfort to know this when we are fevered and restless with the thought of our own impotent struggles and great laziness.
…Jesus won the world through shame, And beckons thee His road.
…the Hell we have to fly is ignorance of the perfect goodness, and separation from it; and the Heaven we have to seek is the knowledge of it;
That worship’s deeper meaning lies
In mercy, and not sacrifice,
Not proud humilities of sense
And posturing of penitence,
But Love’s unforced obedience;
Love is a faith, and one faith leads to another.
‘I pray thee, then, Write me as one that loves his fellow-men.’
THERE cannot be a secret Christian. Grace is like ointment in the hand, it betrayeth itself.
