Popular conceptions of humility see the humble person as the one who is at the bottom of life’s pecking order. They can seem to have nothing when in fact ‘penniless they own the world’
Being lonely sucks! Enforced loneliness while others are going about their ordinary business sucks even more. Yet it is often int the empty times, the lonely times, when we are able to hear God’s voice more clearly and find light in the midst of the dark.
Humility is often intertwined with service. Yet there can be a service that does not add to humility. True humility is of the earth, ‘humus’, and aims to put itself under the feet of everyone and so supporting all.
What key ‘notes’ make up the symphony fo your song for God? Franciscans are called to place humility, love, and joy as the theme for the rhythm of their life.
The Shorter Catechism tells us that the ‘chief end of man is to love God and enjoy him for ever’. Learning to do all things for love and with joy will transform the world.
‘Works a curse!’ It need not be if we decided instead of serving ourselves we use the sweat of our brow to serve others
