We can’t spend our whole lives reading ‘sustaining books’ whilst others work their fingers to the bone around us. In the Christian Life we cannot be Martha or Mary (Luke 10.38-42)[3] we must needs be both!

‘Getting thin’ as anyone slimming coach will let you know, takes a lifestyle change and learning a different attitude to ourselves as much as more care about our diet.
I (we?) need to learn, unlike Pooh Bear, to be a little more nimble and better able to response to human need before selfish greed.
…as the famous book and slogan goes, What Would Jesus Do if Pooh were to come and visit him?
…we, with our friends in the 100 Aker Wood, are all bears of small brain and it takes time for the truth to sink into our sawdust filled heads.
Like Christopher Robin and Pooh, we should learn to be slow to complain – “You didn’t exactly miss,” – and quick to apologise – “I’m so sorry,”. Having done this and ensured harmony in the Body of Christ, we can take aim again and have another go at the real problem instead of beating up each other.
Fasting is not about giving up on stuff but instead is about giving up on the direction we face.
As we get ready for the beginning of Lent it is helpful to remember that we do not need to travel this journey from the old ‘me’ to the real ‘me’ alone.
