Being and Doing – 25 April – Love and Remorse

O THE anguish of the thought that we can never atone to our dead for the stinted affection we gave them, for the light answers we returned to their plaints or their pleadings, for the little reverence we showed to that sacred human soul that lived so close to us, and was the divinest thing God had given us to know.

GEORGE ELIOT

IT’s poor work allays settin’ the dead above the livin’. We shall all on us be dead some time, I reckon, – it ‘ud be better if folks ‘ud make much on us before hand, istid o’ beginnin’ when we’re gone.   It’s but little good you’ll do a-watering the last year’s crop.’

GEORGE ELIOT from Adam Bede

oooOOOooo

These quotes are from ‘Being and Doing’ A selection of helpful thoughts from various authors arranged for daily reading.

Collected by Constance M Whishaw and first published in 1908 for members of the Being and Doing Guild whose object is to do all they can for the relief of suffering and misery.

Most of the writers are 19th Century Christians from Britain and Europe who were committed to living their faith through deeds as well as words – Being AND Doing.

For many years these words have kept me company and encouraged me on the journey of faith.  I hope they will encourage others also.
