Ps. 139.3 (margin):  Thou winnowest my path and my lying down.

Young’s literal translation is, My path and my couch hast Thou fanned.  Could anything be more perfect?  In the East the chaff is separated from the grain by fanning, so there is a double meaning in the word.

Whatever form the fan of the Lord takes (and it takes different forms according to His knowledge of the need of each), whatever the fan be, let us accept it with thanksgiving.

He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:  whose fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly purge His floor, and gather His wheat into the garner (Matt. 3.11, 12).
