1 Cor. 12.28-29:  And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues.   Are all apostles?  are all prophets?  are all teachers?  are all workers of miracles?

‘Helps and guidings’, as Rotherham translates governments, come sixth and seventh in the list in verse 28, but do not recur in verse 29.  Why?

This may be the reason. It is obvious that all are not given gifts of apostleship and so on, but to all who live close to their Lord two gifts are sure to be given.

These gifts are to help others, and to guide them with peace.

Each one of us, however insignificant we may be, can be a helper and a comforter. ‘And some there be who keep themselves in peace and study to bring others into peace.’
