Gal. 5.24:  And they that are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Gal. 6.14:  But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world.

Gal 2.20:  I am crucified with Christ.

‘I have preached much on a crucified life and the necessity of entering upon it, but were I to enter the pulpit again, I would preach upon it much more.’  Adolph Monod wrote that after some months of illness.  One day in prayer he turned to his Lord:  ‘I tremble sometimes at the prospect which lies before me. 

But no:  Thou art Love.  Thou art faithful.  This crucified life, which I so often desired in the days of my health, Thou hast made it for me now, and I accept it in order that I may show that in the midst of this crucified life a Christian can find peace.’

Illness such as his was is not the only form crucifixion can take.  Sometimes it is in the smallest, most unseen things that Christ comes and says:  ‘See in it a chance to die.  Die to your own will, to your own thoughts and opinions, to your I in all its little private preferences.’

For the greatest and deepest spiritual truth always meets us in the small practical matters of everyday common life.
