Luke 24.26: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into His glory?
Mark 8.31: And He began to teach them, that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected… and be killed, and after three days rise again.
‘There is in God – some say –
A deep but dazzling darkness; as men here
Say it is late and dusky, because they
See not all clear.’
The eternal Must, the eternal ‘Ought not?’ of suffering is a deep but dazzling darkness. It is inescapable in the life of all who would follow the Crucified.
It is true that we do not ‘see all clear’. But we do understand a little of what our Lord meant when He said, Ought not Christ to have suffered? And so we come to understand that suffering is not something we should pray to escape, or pray that others whom we love should escape.
‘It was the way the Master went;
Should not the servant tread it still?’
