Whispers of His Power – AUGUST 13

1 John 3.22-23:  And whatsoever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.  And this is His commandment,  That we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He gave us commandment.

United prayer is perhaps the most infallible thermometer we possess for detecting the slightest deviation from the normal.  The normal is the clear peace of hearts perfectly tuned to one another because perfectly tuned to love.  When that is so, then prayer is a harmony.  The notes make chords, the silences are as rests in music.  There is the Selah in both its senses, Pause and Praise.  In such meetings there is a most wonderful uplifting, as adoration passes into intercession.

Such prayer is worth the time it costs for preparation.

Let us prepare for prayer.  Is there any inward thought not wholly Christ-like about some troublesome, disappointing, ungrateful other soul?  Is there any self-centred thought which blinds my heart to others’ needs?

If so, God help us to face it before we meet to pray.  A long look at Calvary shames the soul as nothing else does, and unites it too with fellow Christians, for it banishes the Littleness that can divide.  It shames it out of us.
