Luke 4.1-13:  Our Lord’s temptation in the wilderness.

‘Every weapon by sharpening becomes sharp’, says the Tamil proverb.  How can we sharpen our sword?  In one sense we cannot and need not, for the Sword of the Spirit which is the word of God never grows blunt.  But we can immensely sharpen our powers of using it.

During the temptation in the wilderness our Lord met the tempter with exactly the right word.  We sometimes forget that this showed He had read the book of Deuteronomy so carefully that He knew it from end to end.  He knew just what room in the armoury held the exact weapon He wanted.  As He had no Bible with Him in the wilderness, it is certain that He knew those words off by heart.  The word He had read had become a part of Himself.
