Gal. 5.13:  By love serve one another.

(Weymouth):  Become bondservants to one another in a spirit of love.

The reward of faithfulness is always more responsible work, and this always means more difficult work.  In the world it is different:  the expected reward is more pay.  The difficult work the trader of Luke 19.17 was given, as a reward for being faithful in a very little, was to become the servant of all the people of ten cities.

Sometimes we are working hard, and then we are given something still harder to do.  We may be tempted then to wish for something easier, forgetting our Lord’s way of rewards.  How much easier to trade with £10 than to serve ten cities.  The motto of the Prince of Wales, heir to the great authority of kingship, is ‘I serve’.

The harder the work, the more we are thrown upon Him to whom all ten cities belong.  All souls are Mine, the Lord said to Ezekiel (Ezek. 18.4).  The more responsibility we bear for our Lord, the more necessary it is for us constantly to be with Him, to get to know His wishes.  There is great comfort in this.  Don’t let us miss that comfort.
